Benning in the in the mid-1960's: Whether we were going to the field for a day or a week, the mess kit spoon (and a spare) went into a pocket and the rest of the mess kit stayed in barracks. When it was time to eat, everything went into the canteen cup, whether chow came from the mess hall or out of cans.

GrandLarsony. I'm with the OP -- USGI canteen setups are the way to go. It's about as compact as a cook kit could possibly be. (2) each: Molle canteen carriers, 1 liter canteens, SS GI cups, GI stoves, wire bail kits (very optional), tinfoil, silicone lids (thanks Zelph!). Or just take one set for a day hike.
